Where the comparison usually stops

Wireless selection tends to be argued on range, throughput, and current draw. Those matter, and they are also the easiest numbers to obtain, which is why the argument stops there.

The decisions that dominate cost over a product's life sit further out: how long the module will remain purchasable, what a variant costs to recertify, and whether a field engineer can tell a link problem from a device problem without shipping the unit back.

Lifecycle

A module with a five-year availability commitment and a clear migration path is worth more than a marginally better radio with no such commitment. Redesigning a certified product around a discontinued module is not a component swap; it is a new certification campaign and a new production validation.

Ask for the roadmap and the end-of-life policy in writing, at selection time. Vendors that cannot provide them are telling you something useful.

The radio you can support in year five beats the radio that benchmarks better in week one.

Certification

Pre-certified modules move most of the regulatory burden off the product, but the relief is conditional — antenna choice, placement, and enclosure can all invalidate it. Know which of your design freedoms are constrained by the module's certification before the mechanical design is fixed.

For products going to several markets, map the certification path per region during selection. A stack that is straightforward in one region and a twelve-week exercise in another changes the launch plan, not just the BOM.

Diagnosability

The field question is always the same: is it the device, the link, or the network? A stack that exposes signal quality, retry counts, and connection state to the application layer answers that remotely. One that does not turns every complaint into a truck roll.

Build the diagnostic surface into the firmware from the first version. Adding it later means a fleet upgrade at exactly the moment you least want one.
